MATForce says heroin is on rise

Published:

Drug use can be cyclical among the population, with different substances becoming more or less common over time.

A group of professionals gathered Thursday, April 23, to talk about trends they’ve been seeing in Yavapai County at a meeting of MATForce, a regional group that works with issues concerning substance abuse and recovery.

While people are still smoking pot and popping pills, heroin use seems to be on the rise in Yavapai County more recently, said Cmdr. Dan Raiss with the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office

“Heroin seizures have increased dramatically,” Raiss said.

Last year, Raiss said the drug task force with the sheriff’s office seized 6.6 pounds of heroin, up from around one pound the previous year.

Heroin can carry a street value of around $40,000 a pound, Raiss said, meaning it’s a lucrative product for dealers to get on the streets.
