Camp Verde cheerleaders have sights set on competition

Published:

Beginning Monday, Jan. 5, Missy Harshman will be trying something new her second time around in Camp Verde.

“This is kind of a new experience for us,” said the first-year Cowboys head cheerleading coach, in her second stint after four years as head coach of the team beginning in 2009. “My first year in 2010 was the only year we went to State.”

But the 11-girl squad at CVHS, which in May prevailed upon Harshman to return to coaching them in cheer at CVHS, wants to go back — raising the money to go by running a mini-cheerleading camp from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Jan. 5 through 8, at the Camp Verde Multi-Use Complex.

“When [seniors] Kayla Renken and Mikayla Sallee knew I was back in town, I was asked by the school board to come back and do it again,” she said. “This is a new competition they haven’t been to before, so they’re pretty excited about it.”

Although the mini-camp, which will culminate in a 10-minute performance Friday, Jan. 9, between the CVHS girls and boys varsity basketball games, has been held annually for the past seven years, it was rescheduled so the cheerleaders could prepare for the Arizona State Cheerleading and Pom Tournament, to be held Saturday, March 7, at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix.
