Karstadt’s love of guitars reverberates into business

Published:

Ted Karstadt used to work for Intel down in the Valley of the Sun. Today, he’s his own boss.

It’s been that way for eight years.

Karstadt spends many of his days tucked away in a little music shop off of State Route 89A across the street from the Food City shopping center in Cottonwood, his workplace for the last three years.

Karstadt’s shop is one of the only places between Flagstaff and Prescott that offers what Karstadt does.

Karstadt runs the shop with his wife, Susie.

Susie was quite literally the girl next door.

“She was my neighbor, then we were friends,” Karstadt said.

Now they’ve been married for 28 years.

It took some convincing, Karstadt said, in order to get Susie on board with trading in their old life to go into business for themselves but eight years later they’re making it work.

“I’m not building my retirement running this business,” Karstadt said.
