CVMS volleyball goes back to basics

Published:

Camp Verde Middle School is going back to basics with its volleyball program by going back to a familiar coach.

Lori Showers, who “retired” from coaching track at Camp Verde High School after May, she said, was lured back into coaching by a simple phone call from CVMS principal and athletic director Danny Howe.

“I coached two years of middle school when my daughter played here about six, seven years ago,” she said. “They got me back because Danny called and said, ‘I need a coach.’

“And I said, ‘Sure, I’ll try middle school volleyball.’”

“She had a weak moment,” assistant coach Susan Holm joked. “No time off, at all.”

Showers, whose last volleyball gig was CVHS head volleyball coach from 2002 to 2005, didn’t mind. She wanted to coach middle school sports after retiring from coaching at the high school level.

“I just thought it would be fun to get back,” she said. “It’s less travel — you can build them.”
