It was a good news, bad news scenario for the Camp Verde Cowboys football team Friday, Oct. 4, in its game against the Lee Williams Volunteers in Kingman.
The good news was that the Cowboys [2-4] won 21-13 over the Volunteers [1-5] behind the outstanding running of junior Jordan Reay, who had two touchdowns, and the passing of freshman Dion Fortune, who threw one touchdown pass to sophomore Trever Heyer.
The bad news is that the Cowboys suffered yet another serious injury to a starter when senior running back and linebacker Isaiah McReynold twisted his knee after being sandwiched by two defenders while running the ball.
The Cowboys were already without the services of two starting linemen – Connor Zale [concussion] and Brady Hackett [knee injury] — and are also without starting linebacker Ryan Allred, who is out for the season with a knee injury as well.
“We had some backup linemen in on offense and defense, and that slowed us a little bit,” said Cowboys coach Steve Darby, “But the backups stepped up and did a pretty good job for us.”
