Mingus soccer girls count on senior leadership

The Marauders have started the season vigorously with a solid record, strong senior leadership and young talent.

The Mingus Union High School girls soccer team is now 3-1 after beating the Bradshaw Mountain Bears [2-5] twice and their divisional rival, the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions [3-1], and losing to Division II powerhouse Arcadia [7-0].

In the season home opener against Bradshaw Mountain, on Nov. 27, the Marauders won 4-0. Junior forward Haley Backus scored two goals, senior midfielder and captain Nataly Escamilla scored one goal and freshman forward Martina Bueno scored one goal.

“It was a good game,” said Bud Rhoades, the Marauders’ head coach. “Bradshaw Mountain is getting better. They had better control of the ball.”

The Marauders lost the next game to the undefeated Arcadia Titans.

“I pursued trying to play Arcadia because they are a very good team,” Rhodes said. “Teams like that are who we like to play.”

Arcadia, who lost to the Division II state champions in the semifinals last year, has eight returning starters this season.
