Wrestlers wallop their foes at home meet

Published:

The first wrestling meet of the season was a good one for all of the Cowboys wrestlers.

Camp Verde High School hosted the 6 Way Home Meet on Nov. 20 at the Camp Verde High School gym. Five schools from around the state came to compete: Parker, Canyon State, Valley Christian, Yuma Catholic and Bourgade Catholic.

Camp Verde came out of the tournament with 55 wins, seven losses and 47 pins total.

“The Cowboys did a great job defeating sectional opponents Yuma Catholic, Parker and Valley Christian,” Head Coach Bob Weir said. “We won most everything by pins which was our goal. The matches will help rank the wrestlers higher than the wrestlers from other school in our section which we wrestled.”

Camp Verde beat each team it went up against: Canyon State Academy with a dual score of 54-12, Parker with a dual score of 50-22, Yuma Catholic with a dual score of 57-12 and Valley Christian with a dual score of 60-6. Due to Arizona Interscholastic Association rules, a team can only wrestle four teams total at a multi-meet, so Camp Verde did not wrestle Bourgade Catholic.

Weir said all of the returning wrestlers performed well over the expectation CVHS had for them by giving 100 percent effort and leading the team with their talent and leadership.

Senior Heath Carroll, juniors Chance Weir and Elmer Ruiz, and sophomore Ryan Allred each had four wins, no losses and four pins.

Seniors Joel Lobaugh and Alex Anzar, and sophomores Alex Noone and Jeremy McEachem had four wins, no losses and three pins.

Senior Scott Queen and sophomore Michael Nelson each had three wins, no losses and three pins, and junior Adrian Ruiz had two wins, one loss and two pins.

Six of the Cowboys wins were from new kids who stepped up and performed with great effort.

Sophomore Bryce Kerr moved into the varsity lineup and won one match with a pin and lost three. At their first varsity competition, freshman Matt Mejia had four wins with two pins and no losses, and Alex Casillas had two wins with two
