The Cowboys opened the 2012-2013 basketball season with a commanding win at home.
The Camp Verde High School girls basketball team beat the Williams Vikings 50-10 in its first game of the season in front of a home crowd.
“I was real happy with the defense, especially when the game got out of hand,” Cowboys Head Coach Mark Showers said. “Typically, high school teams start to get sloppy, but the girls maintained their composure and played solid the entire night, and offensively, they showed what we are capable of, particularly with that 20-point third quarter.” Seniors Donnie Buss, Amanda Showers and Katie Wilson, junior Maddy Showers and sophomore Rayana Chatter were the five starters for the Cowboys.
Chatter immediately scored off of Buss’ successful tipoff and the girls played a forceful defense from the start.
Wilson swished the ball from a side shot before stealing the ball back and playing aggressively to get the rebounds.
The girls played with an energetic offense, passing the ball and continually attempting shots.
Chatter sank a three-pointer, making the score 7-0 in the middle of the first quarter.
The only point the Vikings were able to score in the first quarter was from a foul shot.
A Buss pass to Chatter in the inside, a Buss layup assisted by Wilson and two successful free throws by Buss put the girls up 13-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Camp Verde started the second quarter with some struggles such as getting stuck in corners and hard passes to each other. Yet, the Cowboys didn’t slow down on their scoring.
Showers hit a three-pointer and followed that with a jump shot after Wilson swatted the ball to her on a rebound.
The game became increasingly aggressive. Buss stole the ball but tripped. She managed to get the pass to Amanda Showers who did a beautiful lay-up.
