The Yavapai-Apache Nation Tribal Council met with the Camp Verde Unified School District Governing Board last week to discuss the academic performance of students who are members of the tribe and funding sources for programs including the tutoring of Native American students.
After a few snacks and icebreakers at the Oct. 30 meeting, the two elected boards tackled the actual numbers.
“We want to know the best way to serve the tribe and its students,” said Steve Hicks, English language learner and grants coordinator for the district.
Tribal Councilman David Kinsey Jr. said one way to help would be to have more joint meetings between to two governing bodies.
The proximity of the Yavapai-Apache Nation allows the school district to obtain funding in two ways, from federal funds under Title VII and Title VIII.
Title VII funds are provided for programs specifically aimed at helping Native American students, Hicks said.
In Camp Verde, that amounts to around $31,000 in funding that pays the salary of the person who coordinates interventions for students in need of academic assistance.
