MUHS ends season with home tournament win

The Mingus Union High School golf team has ended its regular season with a big tournament win and by sending one golfer to state.

The Marauders hosted the John Uidenich Memorial 2012 Invitational on Friday, Oct. 19, and beat out eight other teams from Northern Arizona and Phoenix Division I and II schools for the No. 1 spot.

With a score of 309, the Marauders grasped the win from second-place Prescott by just one stroke. Page placed third with 321 and Coconino took fourth with a score of 322.

MUHS finally won the John Uidenich Memorial Invitational after finishing third in the past two seasons.

Coconino golfer Drew Fockler won the invitational individually with a score of 70.

Gary Baker led the way for the Marauders, finishing second with a 1-over-par 72. Reni Gallan tied for fourth with a 75. A.J. Valenzuela continued his strong play shooting a 79. Rounding out MUHS top four was Ryan Sullivan with an 83.

“It has been great having Ryan back these last two weeks,” said Craig Mai, MUHS head coach. “We would have been a formidable team if we would have been at full strength the entire season.”

Going into their final week of regular season, the Marauders were finally back to full strength and coming off their best performance of the season as a team.
