Cowboys lose Homecoming in fury of fumbles

Published:

Camp Verde High School suffered a tough loss on Friday, Sept. 21, perhaps the toughest one this season.

On CVHS homecoming night, the Cowboys’ enemy, the Sedona Red Rock High School Scorpions [3-2], came into town seeking revenge for the past seven years.

The Scorpions beat the Cowboys for the first time since 2005, 22 to 14. The Cowboys are now 0-5.

Cowboys Head Coach Luke Steege was frustrated, to the say the least, about the loss.

“I can’t think of one good thing to talk about on how we played after the first quarter,” Steege said. “I just can’t talk about the game right now, I’m sorry.”

The Cowboys had possession of the ball first. They made a few good gains but quickly realized a strong Sedona defense was going to make it difficult on them, especially with Jacob Moore back on the line. Moore was a Second Team All-State defensive end and First Team All-State offensive tackle in Oregon as a junior and recently recovered from a back injury.

The Cowboys defense must have made the Scorpions just as nervous because on Sedona’s first down, a bad snap caused a fumble and a loss of 14 yards followed by a series of no-gain downs and a punt. However, the Cowboys fumbled the ball on the return and the Scorpions recovered it on Camp Verde’s 42-yard line.
