Mingus falls to Sedona as the center cannot hold

Published:

The Marauders played in enemy territory last night, but their power hits and quick defense to keep volleys alive weren’t good enough for the victory.

The Mingus Union High School volleyball team traveled to Sedona Red Rock High School to face their rival, the Scorpions, on Tuesday, Sept. 11, but the undefeated Scorpions [4-0] denied the Marauders [2-4] one set win. The Marauders lost the game, 3-0.

Marauders’ head coach Brian Herman was less than pleased about the loss, to say the least.

“We were off for sure,” Herman said. “Our passing wasn’t what it needed to be. Our defense wasn’t what it needed to be. When we put everything together, we are a really strong team, but we haven’t been able to put it together against the matches we need to.”

In the first set, the Scorpions dominated the scoreboard, never allowing the Marauders to get within two points. Throughout the entire set, Delaney Scanlan, Angel Chavez and Holly Drake got the Marauders come to the Scorpions with kills, but awkward hits and overhitting plagued the team, only adding to the Scorpions’ score.

There were long-lasting rallies between the two teams. Marauder libero Laura Wylie kept the ball alive for the Marauders a number of times, but the Scorpions seemed to know exactly where to hit it to rack up the points. The Scorpions took the best-of-five series lead, winning set one 25-19.
