Cowboys net win against Grand Canyon on home turf

Published:

The Cowboys dominated the soccer field in their first home game of the season when the Grand Canyon Phantoms came to town, beating them 6 to 2.

The Camp Verde High School boys soccer team started the season a little rough, with a 2-1 loss to Phoenix Country Day School, three losses in the Chino Cup Tournament against Desert Christian, defending state champions Blue Ridge and Chino Valley and a 1-1 tie game with Thunderbird Academy. Yet, when they played in front of their home crowd on Friday, Sept. 7, the Cowboys made the victory look easy.

“It’s nice to play at home on our own turf,” Head Coach Dave Miller said. “We play a big field game with a lot of speed and open space. This win will help build our confidence.”

The head coach of the Phantoms actually played on Miller’s club soccer team, but Miller’s worry that he might know how the Cowboys play soon disappeared early in the first 40-minute half.

The Cowboys started the game with awesome defensive plays by Nick Garrity, Chasyn Honea, L.J. Teague and Justin Ray. Andy Woodward was in as goalkeeper.
