The Camp Verde Town Council is on board with efforts to see State Route 260 widened sooner rather than later.
An effort was made several years ago to build a four-lane divided highway between Cottonwood and Camp Verde, safety not the least among the issues driving the cause.
That effort fell apart when the communities and landowners involved couldn’t reach a consensus. The Arizona Department of Transportation moved on, although it did widen part of the highway near Cottonwood and added a couple of passing lanes at certain parts of the road.
The town’s staff has been trying to lay the groundwork for an effort to get the project back on the radar, and now it has the blessing of the Town Council.
This time, the town wants to make sure it has its ducks in a row before approaching ADOT.
Cooperation and unity is key, said Melissa Preston, Camp Verde economic development director.
“We’re approaching this with a strong spirit of cooperation,” Preston said. “We need to show ADOT that we’re professionals who will follow through with our end of the bargain and who will keep our word.”
