Library offers the sweet smell of old books

Published:

The Jerome Public Library will open its Old Book Room to visitors beginning Tuesday, June 12.

Patrons will have a chance to look at the antique books that made up the original library collection, schoolbooks from the Clark Street School, or just sit and read in front of windows that look out onto a sweeping view of the Verde Valley, red rock bluffs and San Francisco Peaks.

The room, located on the third floor of the Town Hall and Civic Center at 600 Clark St., is an antique treasure in itself. It is a former classroom for the Clark Street School and still has the original floors, blackboards and teacher’s cabinets.

It currently holds more than 4,000 volumes, among them some first editions of works of literature, all with original paper check-out cards in them, and it is outfitted with custom-made shelves, a small table and several chairs.

For the full story, see the Wednesday, June 6, edition of the Cottonwood Journal Extra.
