A Camp Verde resident who isn’t happy with the Camp Verde Town Council’s decision last month to raise the local sales tax by a penny is out collecting signatures in an effort to get the tax issue before voters in November.
George Young said he felt like raising the tax rate wasn’t something the Town Council should have taken upon itself without asking the public first.
The issue was put on the ballot in November 2010 when voters gave it an overwhelming “no” with a 2,420 to 663 vote.
The council passed the tax increase last month with a 6-1 vote.
Mayor Bob Burnside voted against the measure, arguing he didn’t feel it was appropriate to raise taxes through council action when he feels there are still people struggling with tough economic times.
