Camp Verde Unified School District Superintendent Dan Brown submitted his resignation.
The move comes after receiving criticism from some members of the school board last month during a discussion about renewing Brown’s contract for another year, though Brown didn’t cite any particular criticism or conflicts in his letter of resignation.
Instead, Brown wrote he thoroughly enjoyed working with the faculty, staff and students at the school district.
“You reach that point in your life when you realize it’s time to go, to do something different,” Brown said. “I feel it’s in the best interests of the district to find the next right answer.”
Brown said he didn’t know what direction the board would take in response to his resignation.
If accepted, Brown said he wants to make sure there’s a transition in leadership that won’t be harmful to the students of the district.
The school board is scheduled to possibly discuss Brown’s resignation at a meeting set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, at the Multi-Use Center on Camp Lincoln Road, after press time.
“I just felt now was the time,” Brown said.
The resignation would be effective Saturday, June 30.
Brown said for the sake of the students, faculty and staff he wanted to make sure the change in leadership would be clean.
“We need to be clear on where we’ve been,” Brown said, adding he feels the district has an excellent record of achievement.
In the meantime, Brown said he would like to keep working to improve the district.
“We’re still going to roll up our sleeves and focus on expanding student achievement and growth,” Brown said.
Brown said he didn’t yet have a plan for what the future after will hold, but he’d like to find another opportunity in education somewhere in Arizona.
“I’ll just have to find the next right career,” Brown said.
Brown served as superintendent since 2009 after being hired as the replacement for former Superintendent Jeff Van Handle. Van Handle left the position after the school board decided not to renew his contract.
Before working as superintendent, Brown had been the principal of Camp Verde Middle School since 2004.
