In what has become one of Camp Verde’s more recent traditions, Bigfoot, the famous monster truck, will be returning this weekend to do what it does best: crush cars into mangled oblivion with world record holding driver Dan Runte behind the wheel. The giant truck has been traveling the country and crushing cars since 1981.
It’s not an everyday event in a small town, and it typically draws a decent crowd to watch the action.
Local safety groups and first responders in the area want to take advantage of that crowd to not only teach how to keep your family safe, but to provide a chance for the community to get to know the men and women who work around the clock to protect them.
It’s the third year the Camp Verde Marshal’s Office and the Kiwanis Club have worked with the Bigfoot event organizer to hold an annual Safety Fair.
In addition to local town deputies, representatives from the Yavapai-Apache Police Department, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office and the Camp Verde Fire District will be on hand to meet and greet.
Another highlight of the day’s events will be the Bike Rodeo, a test of two-wheeled skill open to children ages 6 to 12. Participants need to bring their own bicycles, but organizers plan to raffle off two new bikes to a couple of lucky winners. Older participants will have the opportunity to win a new set of tires, no small prize.
Another contest will pit people’s skills with the T-shirt cannon as they try to shoot the shirts through a tire.
Proceeds from concession sales will go to help the Kiwanis Club promote youth and other community programs, including student clubs and activities.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Outpost Mall on Finnie Flat Road in Camp Verde.
