Cottonwood police officers arrested 29-year-old Cottonwood resident Cody Gilmore on the evening of June 26 following “a string of violent and dangerous incidents that spanned multiple locations and endangered numerous lives,” according to CPD Sgt. Chad Sinn.
The incident began with a report of a domestic dispute between Gilmore and his ex-girlfriend.
After a verbal altercation, Gilmore allegedly unlawfully entered the victim’s residence, reportedly stole her vehicle and allegedly intentionally rammed another vehicle she owned, causing extensive damage and pushing it over a curb.
Gilmore reportedly later picked up the victim and her three children, all under the age of 15 and, while allegedly driving under the influence, crashed the vehicle into a tree. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and a witness promptly contacted authorities.
Before Cottonwood officers could locate the vehicle, Gilmore reportedly fled the area on foot. He then allegedly unlawfully entered an occupied home on North Main Street. After Gilmore reportedly exited the home and attempted to steal the roommate’s vehicle, the startled resident called 911.
Unable to access the vehicle, Gilmore reportedly fled once again, this time toward Riverfront Park in Cottonwood.
With assistance from witness reports, a CPD officer located Gilmore lying in the river between Riverfront Park and Dead Horse Ranch State Park. When approached, Gilmore allegedly became verbally combative, fled on foot and then violently charged the Cottonwood officer, striking him headfirst and causing a significant leg injury.
Despite the injury, the officer was able to subdue Gilmore and take him into custody. The injured officer was transported to Verde Valley Medical Center, where he was treated and released several hours later. He is now recovering at home.
Gilmore was transported to the Yavapai County Detention Facility in Camp Verde, where reportedly he remained combative with officers. During a court-authorized blood draw, he assaulted a YCDC deputy by spitting on him.
Gilmore was charged with two counts of criminal damage over $10,000, five counts of criminal damage; one count of burglary in the second degree; two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer; three counts of aggravated DUI with passengers under 15 years old; four counts of endangerment; three counts of disorderly conduct; and one count each of aggravated assault causing temporary disfigurement, unlawful use of means of transportation and resisting arrest.
“The Cottonwood Police Department commends the involved officer for his courage, professionalism, and perseverance in the face of a violent and unpredictable situation,” CPD Sgt. Chad Sinn stated. “We wish him a full and speedy recovery.
“This incident is a sobering reminder of the dangers law enforcement Officers face daily while working to protect our community.”
