Cottonwood police release bodycam footage of officer-involved fatal shooting on April 27

Published:

“The Cottonwood Police Department is providing the following statement to ensure transparency regarding the officer-involved shooting that occurred on April 27, 2025, in the 1000 block of South Vista Grande Drive in Cottonwood,” according to CPD Sgt. Chad Sinn.

“At approximately 9:55 p.m., two Cottonwood Police Officers — veterans with 5 and 17 years of law enforcement experience — responded to a domestic violence call,” Sinn stated, in the general area of the area of Viejo and Fir Streets.

“The situation escalated and tragically resulted in the death of the involved subject, identified as 58-year-old David Coomer, a resident of Cottonwood,” Sinn stated.

Both officers were equipped with AXON body-worn cameras, which are being reviewed as part of the investigation. The name of the officers involved have not yet been released.

Coomer’s wife had called 911 and reported that Coomer had been throwing items in the home and she left the house. She told dispatchers and officers upon arrival that Coomer was in a large walk-in closet that contained numerous firearms, according to the video.

Coomer’s adult son was escorted out of the home by police as a precaution. The son’s face and photos in the home have been blurred in the footage.

Coomer emerges from the closet around 5:34 in the video, holding an object that appears to be a shotgun. One officer calls “gun” and both officers discharged their firearms at Coomer, who is struck and collapses to the ground. A shotgun was recovered next to the man’s body, according to Sinn.

The footage below shows the footage two officers the incident involved in the incident inside the home.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division is leading the investigation, Sinn stated. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The Cottonwood Police Department thanks the public for their patience, understanding, and continued support as investigators complete their work, Sinn stated.
