Nevarez overtakes Teague for third seat in Mingus Union school board race

Published:

There are six candidates running for three seats on the Mingus Union High School District Governing Board: James Ariola, Taylor Bell, Ashley Koepnick, Rev. Frank Nevarez, incumbent Carol Anne Teague and Joe Wegwert, Ph.D.

Koepnick has a substantial lead in the race. Bell has the second-most number of votes.

The race for the third seat is still up in the air. Teague initially has the second-most number of votes, based on early voting tabulated in the hours after polls closed, but as day-of votes are tabulated, she slipped in to third place, ahead of Nevarez by about 300 votes, then 133, and as of the morning of Friday, Nov. 8, by 68 votes.

Ballot drops on Wednesday, Nov. 6, Thursday, Nov. 7, and Friday, Nov. 8, have significantly favored Nevarez over Teague, while adding more to the lead of Koepnick and Bell. Nevarez was ahead of Teague by 34 votes late Friday, 23 votes on Saturday, Nov. 9, 33 votes on Sunday, Nov. 10, and 83 votes late Monday, Nov. 11.

Teague’s campaign allies, James Ariola and Joe Wegwert, Ph.D., were both defeated.
