‘Adventure begins’ at Camp Verde Community Library

The Camp Verde Community Library will be hosting a variety of activities for its 2024 Summer Reading Program beginning on Saturday, June 1. 

This year’s program theme is “Adventure Begins at Your Library.” Both the Children’s Library and the Teen Library have six weeks of activities planned to encourage teens and kids to keep reading and learning throughout the summer, including hands-on STEM activities to promote problem-solving and creativity. 

The summer reading season will begin on Saturday, June 1, at 10 a.m. in the Terracotta Room with activities and info booths from different local organizations, including Out of Africa Wildlife Park, Red Rock State Park, Rockin’ River Ranch State Park, Fort Verde State Park and Horses with Heart. Participants can enjoy hotdogs and snacks while signing up for summer reading programs. 

Weekly events for children from infancy to age 11 will start on Tuesday, June 4. 

The weekly schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesdays, 10:30 to 11 a.m.: Zumba for ages 4 through 7.
  • Tuesdays, 11 to 11:30 a.m.: Zumba for ages 8 through 11.
  • Tuesdays, 5:45 to 6:45 p.m.: Outdoor Hour with Ms. Letty at Rezzonico Park. 
  • Thursdays, 11 a.m.: Story Time with Ms. Letty and Friends.
  • Thursdays, 11:30 a.m.: Family yoga.
  • Thursdays, 2 to 4 p.m.: Window Art.
  • Saturdays, 1 p.m.: Summer Movie Saturdays.

Special programs will be:

  • Thursday, June 27: Foam party at the Community Field.
  • Saturday, June 29: Presentation on desert safety by Sonoran Reptiles at CVCL.
  •  Saturday, July 13: Premiere of an outdoor movie at the Community Field in partnership with the Sedona International Film Festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre. 

Ms. Letty, the children’s librarian, has ordered new books for summer reading. Books that children check out from the Children’s Library will not be subject to overdue fees. 

The Teen Library will also be hosting a lineup of new summer activities and events organized by teen librarian Zack Garcia:

  • Minecraft Book Club: Friday, May 17, through June 21, 1 p.m. Ages 9 through 12. Participants will be reading “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” and will bring the book to life through the environment of Minecraft. 
  • Teen Crafts: Monday, June 3, through July 8, 11 a.m. Garcia and the Verde Youth Action Alliance will have a variety of crafts including tie dye, water coloring, crochet, beading and more.
  • Disc Golf Basics: Tuesday, June 4, through July 9, 8 a.m. The basics of disc golf will be taught at Rezzonico Family Park with a new skill added each week and mini-games played throughout. For the sixth week, the participants will play a nine-hole round at the Camp Verde Disc Golf Course.
  • Books & Lemonade: Saturday, June 8, through July 13, 1 p.m. Garcia and VYAA will discuss books both old and new while escaping the heat with a cold drink. 
  • Game night will still take place on Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m. There is a weekly theme and participants receive a slice of pizza.

Alyssa Smith was born and raised in Maryland, earning her degree in Media Studies from the University of North Carolina Greensboro after a period of traveling out West. She spent her high school and early college years focusing on music journalism, interviewing, photographing and touring with bands and musicians. Her passion is analog photography and she loves photographing the scenes of Jerome, where she resides. Her love of the Southwest brought her to the reporter position at Larson Newspapers where she enjoys hiking with her dog along the Verde River and through the desert’s red rocks.
