Camp Verde Town Council talks restrooms & concessions

Published:

The Camp Verde Town Council discussed construction options for the planned concession and restroom facility for the Camp Verde Sports Complex during its regular meeting on Wednesday, March 20.

In July 2023, staff issued a request for bids for the construction of the concession and restroom facility for the sports complex. They received two bids, one for approximately $1.8 million and another for approximately $1.35 million. Both bids were rejected for excessive cost and town staff have since examined alternative options to reduce the cost of the restrooms.

CIP Manager Martin Smith presented renderings of potential designs to the council and explained that staff had determined the site would need a minimum of six fixtures in both the male and female restrooms.

Councilwoman Robin Godwin asked if there could be more stalls for women, as they often have small children with them and require more time, which Smith replied could be added to the design, while Councilwoman Cris McPhail called for making the building as aesthetically pleasing as possible and maximizing storage space for the price.

Councilwoman Jessie Murdock agreed on incorporating storage space and added that she could not fathom why a restroom would cost $1 million, and Councilwoman Wendy Escoffier suggested adding a family restroom.

Vice Mayor Marie Moore requested that the council schedule a work session to discuss their options in greater detail.

The council directed staff to continue investigating alternative methods of construction for future discussion.

Earth Day

The council proclaimed Saturday, April 13, as Camp Verde’s Arbor Day and Earth Day celebration for 2024.

Diane Scantlebury from the town’s Tree Advisory Committee said that to maintain Camp Verde’s Tree City USA status, they plant a tree each year around Earth Day or Arbor Day.

For the past six years, the committee has been collaborating with the Yavapai-Apache Nation on a joint Earth Day celebration. This year, the event will take place on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park.

The TAC will be giving away 50 one-gallon mesquite trees and donating a five-gallon tree for a raffle. They have a sister tree program with Y-AN whereby TAC purchases two trees for planting at Rezzonico Family Park and the Veterans Memorial Park.

Town Manager Search

Interim Town Manager Gayle Mabery said that staff reviewed the applicant pool for the town manager position the previous evening in collaboration with the hired recruitment firm and expect to announce the finalists early next week.

A public meet-and-greet with the candidates will be held at the Camp Verde Community Library on Thursday, April 4, at 5 p.m.
