Recreation Association brings batting cages to Camp Verde Sports Complex

Published:

The Camp Verde Recreation Association has been working on various projects to enhance the Camp Verde Sports Complex, the most recent being installing batting cages.

Brianna Murdock, president of the Camp Verde Recreation Association, founded the group in 2022 to help with developing community sports and adding more items to the sports complex. The group has about 10 members so far.

The group raises funds for projects and items they’d like to see at the sports complex that are not in the town’s current budget or the first phase of planning for the complex. They work with the town to make sure there isn’t project overlap.

“Our main focus is adding different items that aren’t in the town’s current budget or plans for the sports complex,” Murdock said. “For example, we want to do a couple of sand volleyball courts and an area for cornhole.”

The group’s batting cages project started around six months ago after receiving approval from the town. Using funds from previous fundraisers and direct donations, they started with building a fence.

The project received a donation of dirt and turf from Ligon Excavation, which was recently placed. A net will then be purchased to go inside the cages to make them usable by residents. Murdock said that the project is nearly finished.

The association’s planned projects in the near future may include putting in shade structures, like ramadas and picnic tables, and sand volleyball courts. For past fundraisers, they’ve hosted raffles and a cornhole tournament and may do something similar for future fundraisers.

“Sports are a huge part of our community,” Murdock said. “Our young kids have needed more room to practice and we needed more fields. We’ve got the sports complex, but we wanted to add more to it. We’re grateful for it, but we wanted to make it the best that it can be for all of our youth that are in sports.”

The group is also helping raise funds for the disc golf course with help from Camp Verde Parks and Recreation and the Camp Verde Disc Golf group. The 18-hole course will be installed in and around the stormwater control flood basin of the sports complex.
