Project Homecoming Closet returns to help students with free prom dresses

Published:

Project Homecoming Closet will be back at Mingus Union High School on Friday, Sept. 15, from 2:30 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the MUHS Small Gym, which is Building 200.

Project Homecoming Closet is an outreach program that allows high school students from all over Northern Arizona to shop for homecoming clothing, jewelry, handbags, shoes and more, all free of charge.

“Project Prom and Project Homecoming Closet began at Mingus in 2021 and has served over 200 students in Northern Arizona,” said Sarah Garrett, family and community outreach coordinator at MUHS. “Members of the Rotary Club of the Verde Valley and Sedona, Mingus Interact Club and Mingus Hope Center work hard to set up, take down and work the shopping days. Without their enthusiasm, care and perseverance, the closet would not have had the opportunity to reach our community and impact our students the way that it has.

“The community has donated more than 500 items for this project and Verve Events and Tents donates the use of their items to create dressing rooms with mirrors and clothing racks. It truly is a community effort, and we envision these closet projects growing more each passing year.”

Homecoming week at Mingus is scheduled for the week of Sept. 18. There are volleyball games scheduled against Lee Williams on Monday, Sept. 18, starting at 4 p.m., and the homecoming football game is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m.
