Cottonwood council approves Ridgecrest expansion

Published:

Construction started in 2014 on several single-unit dwellings off 12th street in Cottonwood, in a development known as Ridgecrest Townhomes.

Over the course of the next two and a half years, a total of 16 units went up, with developer Bill Jackson building four at a time and thenrenting out those four and beginning work on the next set of homes.

At a meeting on May 21, the Cottonwood City Council approved a plat for additional 22 units at Ridgecrest.

Work has already started on the additional units, which will be constructed all at once. Jackson hopes to have them on the market by the early fall.

With Cottonwood facing a housing shortage, Jackson expects that it will not take long before the new units are filled by tenants.

“I’m really going to be pushing to get these built,” Jackson said. “We’ve been having people calling continually since we’ve built our last units. Our response has been, ‘We don’t have anything available, wait until the summer.’

“Now we’re starting to make a waiting list of potential clients. As we’re closer to having them finished, we can start going through the process of approving them.”

Jackson said that the initial expectation for the development had been elderly and retiree couples, but that many had ended up being rented to younger professional couples, since those are the people most lacking housing in the area.

The planned units will be two-bedroom, two- bathroom units, along with garages, nearly identical to the previous units in the development. The gated development has a private road.

The Cottonwood City Council approved the preliminary plat for the road with the stipulation to complete the private road according to certain city regulations.
