Hoops camp touches on skills

Published:

Mingus Union High School’s basketball programs hosted the Veteran’s Weekend Skills camp, a one-day, six-hour camp for 52 kids in third through eighth grade on Friday, Nov. 10.

Varsity boys head coach Dave Beery and his team led the first session, which focused on shooting, while girls head coach Frank Nevarez and his team worked on ball handling during the second session.

The goal of the camp was to get kids in the community into the gym on their holiday.
“Just trying to get the young kids involved in our basketball programs for the future,” Nevarez said. “So far they’re loving it.”

The camp had one of the best turnouts that Nevarez had heard of. Campers were split into groups of about six each with at least one varsity player leading. Between sessions they were treated to a sack lunch from the high school’s cafeteria. At the end of each session, they scrimmaged.
