Mingus Union High School’s volleyball team took on the No. 7-ranked Coconino High School Panthers in a Grand Canyon Region contest on Monday, Sept. 25, losing 1-3 [19-25, 25-23, 12-25, 14-25].

The Marauders faced off with the state’s leader in kills in senior outside hitter Dana Parker, who is committed to play beach volleyball at the University of Arizona.

They quickly fell into a 1-7 hole in the first game but brought it back to 4-7 before a service error killed the momentum.

A 7-2 Panthers run extended their lead and they pulled away to take game one. Mingus was down 3-6 and 10-14 in game two, but leveled things at 18. Two lead changes later the Marauders were up 23-22 and senior outside hitter Nikki Zielinski sealed it at 25-23. Parker did not play a single point of the set.

She returned with seven kills in game three, where Coconino again raced out to an early lead and did not look back, winning 12-25.

Game four saw Mingus hang around in the opening stages before falling 14-25.
