Football
The Marauders [0-3] fell 42-25 at Cactus High School on Friday, Sept. 8.
Senior running back Tyler Kelly carried the ball 14 times for a whopping 221 yards and two touchdowns.
Junior running back Alex Nelson rushed 12 times for 53 yards and a score, and junior quarterback Antoine Zabala scored on the ground, too.
Zabala was four of 13 passing for 44 yards and two interceptions.
Mingus scored first but missed the extra point.
Cactus was up 14-6 after the first quarter but Mingus made it 20-13 by halftime on a 57-yard Kelly touchdown. Then it trailed 20-19 after Zabala scored from a yard out.
The Cactus defense returned an interception to score and converted the two-point try. Kelly broke off another huge touchdown, this time 68 yards.
Mingus led 28-25 going into the fourth, but Cactus scored twice more to take the win.
Senior defensive back Marcos Valenzuela grabbed an interception in the loss.
The Marauders next play in its region opener at home against Lee Williams High School. Kickoff is at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15.

Cross Country
The cross country team competed in its first race of the season at the Peaks Cross Country Invitational in Flagstaff on Sept. 2. Keeping the high altitude in mind, the runners were satisfied with their performances, head coach Justine Sparks said.
Junior Cody Wager finished in 21:07.44 to lead the way for the boys, with sophomore Luke Doerksen not far behind at 21:26.63. Freshman Riley Bliss had a strong performance in his first high school race, crossing the finish line in 21:50.30. Fellow ninth-grader Henry Durnez [23:32.41] and sophomores John Valentine [24:32.26] and Braden Arnold [24:50.78] rounded things out.
Only two girls traveled: Seniors Hannah DeVore and Tiffany Drake, who finished in 24:29.78 and 41:39.91, respectively.
On Saturday, Sept. 9, only the boys raced at the Ray Wherely Cross Country Invite at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Freshman Jehiah Rogers took first out of the Marauders runners in 20:30.88. Doerkson [20:57.11], Bliss [21:06.17], Durnez [21:36.86] and Wager [21:44.39] rounded things out.
