Track looking toward State

Camp Verde High School’s runners, throwers and jumpers continued down the path to the 2017 Arizona Interscholastic Association Division IV State meet, many achieving personal bests at the Sedona Invitational, held on April 18 at Sedona Red Rock High School.

Junior Nate Schultz headlined the afternoon by taking the triple jump in a personal best 43-07, besting Arizona’s current No. 2 Joe Glomski of Sedona Red Rock on the day. That distance lifted Schultz to third overall in Division IV.

Senior Alana Neary also marked a personal best in the triple at 30-07, claiming sixth.

“For weeks and weeks and weeks I was stuck at 29, 28,” Neary said. “I jumped a bit different actually, I went really slow but with longer strides.”

Schultz took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in a personal best 43.43. He was fourth in the long jump, leaping 20-02.5.

Sophomore Chris Holdgrafer continued his strong season in the hurdles. Holdgrafer took first in both the 110- and 300-meter races in the freshman/sophomore division in 16.68 and 45.93, respectively. The 110 time was tied for a personal best, a state automatic time; for the 300, it was only the second time this season he raced that distance.

Holdgrafer also claimed a personal best in the long jump at 19-04.

“It’s mostly dedication and wanting to do better for myself, there’s not more of an explanation,” Holdgrafer said.

Sophomore Joseph Jones took sixth the 400-meter run in 57.26 in the freshman/sophomore division. Jones was eighth in the varsity 800-meter run, finishing in 2:12.45.

For the girls, Neary took 11th in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.28 and 13th in the 300 hurdles in 53.55, an event in which she is qualified for state.

Senior Shayla Campbell-Kilburn took ninth in the shot put with a throw of 26-09.25 and second in the discus, throwing 97-05. Campbell-Kilburn is currently No. 5 in Division IV in the discus.

Junior Bryanna Truett was fourth in the high jump, clearing the 4-08 mark, which tied her season best and is a state automatic height. Truett finished eighth in the triple in 29-11.75.
