The 2017 Camp Verde High School golf team may field a lineup filled with young and relatively inexperience golfers, but, according to head coach Christian Fuller, “they have fun, they want to learn.”
In their first match, the Cowboys shot 260 to finish fourth of four teams during the nine-hole round played Thursday, March 2, at Verde Santa Fe. Fuller said a number of players are still working on the basics.
“It went as expected,” he said. “It can be simple things like getting used to the rules of the game, putting, chipping.”
Fuller went on to mention that every time he checked in with one of the groups, he saw one of his golfers “do something I’m really proud of.”
“I saw a few positive things from each player, really,” Fuller said.
He acknowledged that it is a rebuilding year for the Cowboys, but his current group of golfers do not lack enthusiasm.
“They’re young they haven’t played a ton of golf,” Fuller said. “They have fun, they want to learn, I think we’re going to have fun this season.”
Sophomore No. 1 golfer Kolby Hedges finished the round with a 57 to lead Camp Verde. Junior No. 2 Nick Daniels ended with a score of 66 while senior Marisa Presmyk had one stroke more with 67. Junior No. 3 William Webster shot a 70 to round out the top four scores.
“The kids tended to struggle around the greens,” Fuller said. “We have to work on that a lot; they’re going to get that experience.”
The sum of the top four finishers’ scores from each team are used to determine the winner of the match.
Sedona Red Rock High School finished in first with 167, Northland Preparatory Academy was second with 175 and Wickenburg third with 181.
Individually, Hedges was the top Cowboy, finishing in 15th place.
The team faced off with Northland Prep again at Verde Santa Fe on Tuesday, March 7, but results were unavailable at press time. It next hits the links at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at Paradise Honors High School.
