Summer reading kicks off

Published:

The Camp Verde Community Library and Camp Verde Parks and Recreation are sponsoring the Summer Fun Zone Field Day at Butler Park.

The free event begins at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 1, and extends into the evening. All proceeds benefit the library’s summer reading program.

The event officially kicks off the summer reading program, which encourages reading by allowing participants to earn points and badges for doing activities over the summer, including reading, playing games, going to library events and experiencing things in the community. Earn one point for every minute logged in an activity. After hitting 1,600 points, participants get a certificate.

The library has arranged a variety of summer activities to help people earn points, including a self-defense tutorial, a moonlight hike and a final pool party. These events and others are generally offered for free, though some require small fees.

Information on the summer reading program — as well as how participants can win various age-appropriate prizes — will be available at the field day event in addition to many other activities, including a firefighter demo, an obstacle course and relays, among others.

“This is the first time we’re doing the field day,” Camp Verde Community Library Programs and Outreach Coordinator Sebra Choe said, adding that each year the library tries to make the summer reading kickoff event different. For this year, sports and an active lifestyle are the theme.

“We’re encouraging anything to get you moving and your brain active,” Choe added.

Summer readers have a few other reasons to log their points. On Friday, June 24, if 80 percent of the people logged into the summer reading program have logged at least 1,000 points, the library staff has agreed to dress up in crazy costumes and lead patrons in a fitness-app challenge. A second such staff incentive day is scheduled for July.
