Vance Tewawina, a Camp Verde High School senior and the top golfer for the Cowboys, shot his lowest score in a two-day invitational to finish his career tied for 24th at the Division III state championships Saturday, May 14.
“I didn’t really care about my scores,” said Tewawina, who will join his older brother, Wilfred, on a college golf team in Kansas beginning in August. “My mentality going into my senior year was just to have fun representing my school and my family. It really did work.”
Tewawina shot his first 75 on an 18-hole course Friday, May 13 — the first day of State — on Antelope Hills’ south golf course in Prescott.
“I was really excited because it happened the first day of State,” said Tewawina, who shot below a 160 score for the first time in a two-day tournament. “I honestly couldn’t imagine anything better.”
Although the wind and the trees of the north course limited him to an 11-over-par the second day, Tewawina’s 157 was still good enough to tie him with two other golfers, including one from fourth-place Show Low High School.
“The second day, really, it was just four three-putt [hole]s that got to me,” he said. “I believe it was the best finish in all my years as a golfer. I was really pumped after the first day.”
