Just before 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, the Cottonwood Fire and Medical Department responded to a report of a brush fire located near the Verde River behind an old town Cottonwood residence.

Upon arrival fire personnel found active fire in brush and trees located adjacent to the Old Town Jail Trail. The fire was controlled by firefighters within 10 minutes of their arrival.

The fire was contained to an area of less than a quarter of an acre. Investigation revealed two campsites located adjacent to the fire and the fire was determined to be human caused. The dry conditions the Verde Valley is experiencing are rapidly increasing fire danger in local vegetation including grasses, brush and trees. The public is encouraged to use extreme caution when utilizing fire or spark producing tools and appliances.
