A group in the community is coming together to help raise money for a Cottonwood girl with leukemia.
Kristiana Gonzalez, 9, has lymphoblastic leukemia, a disease that affects blood cells in her bone marrow.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, rain or shine, a dice run will be held to raise money for Kristiana.
Cheri Marx said she first learned about what the girl was facing when she made a wedding cake for the family.
Marx said Kristiana’s mother had to quit her job to help her daughter get the care she needs.
“She’s in and out of the hospital,” Marx said.
Kristiana has to go down to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital once a week. If there are problems, the stays in the Phoenix area can become extended.
Marx said the family stays at the Ronald McDonald House when they can. It’s around $20 a night, Marx said.
“It doesn’t sound like much but when you’ve lost your income, it really starts to add up,” Marx said. “It’s real tough on the family.”
Marx said that she and her husband, Allan, wanted to do something to help out, something to get the community involved.
Some local organizations are helping provide the family with food, but there are still more expenses.
