Town debates process to demolish unsafe homes

Published:

If it comes down to it, the Town of Camp Verde has the right to demolish structures that are deemed unsafe for habitation.

While the town’s elected leaders have been entrusted with that kind of decision, they aren’t eager to just destroy private property without giving the owner a chance to come into compliance with town rules.

One such case was discussed last week at a Sept. 23 meeting of the Camp Verde Town Council.

The property in question was a manufactured home on Ripple Road out in the Verde Lakes neighborhood. Complaints had been lodged with the town starting in January. The initial complaint was anonymous but triggered a visit from the town’s building officials.

A previous notice had been apparently physically posted on the property but according to a town report, the information had faded due to sunlight. The home had significant issues involving mold, electrical wiring and the lack of a septic system.

The matter was originally supposed to be brought before the Town Council at its July 15 meeting.

However, one day before that meeting, the town learned that the home had been sold.

The new owner, as well as the owner of the land on which the home sits, were again notified of the issues concerning its condition.

A additional inspection revealed that nothing had been done to fix the situation.
