Wright at home on the links

Mike Wright has a pretty sweet job.

He gets to hang out on the golf course all day.

Wright is general manager at the Verde Santa Fe golf course in Cornville. Last Thursday afternoon he was behind the counter at the course’s pro shop, answering phones and helping customers as they wandered in to browse the brightly colored collared shirts, hats and golf club coverings.

Originally from Monterrey, Calif., Wright has been an Arizona resident since 1979.

Much of that time was spent in the Valley of the Sun.

Wright moved to the Verde Valley two years ago.

The job came when the owner called him up and asked if he was interested.

He still has a house in the Phoenix area, however.

Wright’s wife runs a restaurant in Gilbert, aptly named the Gilbert House.

Wright said he goes down there once a week to help out but golf is his main thing.

Wright is also pretty impressed with the changes that have been taking place in downtown Gilbert.

“I remember when there were four restaurants within a two square-mile area,” Wright said. “Now there are 36 in the same area.”

Wright said he’s pretty much always played golf, the third generation in his family to take up the sport.

It wasn’t always his priority, however.

Back in high school he played football and went on to play his freshman year at Washington State University.

“Golf was too easy for me,” Wright said.
