Search for new top cop begins

The city of Cottonwood is starting the process of finding a new police chief.

Current Chief Jody Fanning announced his retirement in June; his last day will be in January.

Cottonwood City Manager Doug Bartosh said he is appreciative that Fanning gave the city enough time to conduct a proper search.

“The initial thought process is to keep the advertising within the state,” Bartosh said. “The chief is aware of several candidates; I’m aware of several fine candidates.”

Among those candidates are three from within the department.

“I think we have very well qualified people in the state that we can at least start this process,” Bartosh said.

Recruiting from within Arizona has its advantages, Bartosh said.

“It would bring in someone familiar with the laws in this state,” Bartosh said.

That would eliminate the need for a certification process to get a new chief up to speed.
