Seed library sprouts ahead

Published:

Everyone can go to the library and check out books but starting next week, people can also go to the library to check out seeds.

The “seed library” is a project organized by the Verde Thumbs, a Verde Valley gardening club that is enthusiastic about coaxing plants from the local soil.

“There will be flowers but it’s mostly going to be vegetables,” said Janice Montgomery, a club member and one of the project’s organizers.

The seed library will be holding its grand opening Saturday,

Sept. 12, at the Cottonwood Public Library at 11 a.m.

The plan is to have the seed library available at the library every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Of course, when a book is checked out, it can be returned.

A seed, once it grows into a plant, can’t really be checked back in.

However, the good thing about plants is that they produce more seeds, and some of those is what the seed library would like to see eventually returned.

That way, more seeds will be available for more people to borrow from the library and use for themselves.

There’s an added benefit, Montgomery said.

The more a particular plant species is grown in the local Arizona soil, the more future generations of the plant will adapt to the local desert conditions.
