Brian Dubasik, Hayden Uhler and Dale Zellner showed June 27 why Weekend Wars continues to be the venue for boys to discover wrestling and men to be discovered as wrestlers.
“Most wrestlers want to know how they can be discovered,” said Mario Chagolla Sr., Camp Verde High School assistant coach and director of Weekend Wars. “With such popularity, our venue was chosen as the best place to hold Grand Canyon University wrestle-offs for potential recruitment of kids who have an interest in wrestling at the college level but have not yet committed to anywhere.”
Brian Dubasik
The secret is out on Dubasik, a recent graduate of Apple Valley, [Calif.] High School.
After training with Chagolla’s New Breed Wrestling club the last four years, Dubasik was discovered by the Grand Canyon University wrestling program after he defeated all competitors from around the Southwest at 152 pounds.
“Coach Michael Hatcher was extremely pleased with the potential recruits that showcased their skills,” Chagolla said. “Weekend Wars is awesome for kids … wanting to be scouted. It’s practically unheard of.”
Hayden Uhler
But despite tournament championships in Las Vegas, Prescott and San Jose, Calif., the dominance of Uhler and three of his younger brothers remains a Sterrett Wrestling Complex secret.
“Many of our wrestlers are brothers or sons of former greats, to continue what some consider the breeding of studs,” Chagolla said after the 130-pound Uhler, a junior at Camp Verde High School, defeated state champions from Arizona and Colorado. “His coachability and work ethic have made him a great wrestler. I am extremely proud of him.”
At the end of February, Ryan Allred became the first Cowboys wrestler to win four state titles in four years.
At his current pace, Uhler, who was named outstanding middleweight wrestler for his June 27 showing, could become the second.
Certainly, Chagolla said, his “constant improvement and dedication will help him achieve his dream of becoming a three-time state champion this coming year.”
