Dog reunited after long trek

Published:

The Camp Verde Animal Control Department, which works as part of the Camp Verde Marshal’s Office, saw a significant jump in activity last month, according to numbers released last week by the Town of Camp Verde.

The department responded to 43 calls, more than double what was handled in May 2014.

One notable incident with animal control actually took place earlier this month and therefore wasn’t reported in the numbers released last week.

A family from Sierra Vista was camping up in Stoneman Lake when they lost their dog, a husky, named Daisy.

The family eventually had to leave without the dog.

On June 6, a resident called the marshal’s office to report a dog found wandering along an area around Montezuma Castle Highway.

The dog had visible paw injuries.

Immediately, volunteers started looking for a new home for the dog. The dog’s picture went up on a Facebook group, where it was recognized by the owners and reunited.

The dog had walked more than 30 miles.

“After speaking with the owner, we can only assume Daisy was headed south to Sierra Vista, where she lives,” according to Darby Martin, CVMO administrative assistant.

The office as a whole responded to fewer calls last month than it did in May 2014.

A total of 1,176 calls were logged, down from 1,292 the previous May.

There were more traffic stops, however, with deputies reporting 244 incidents compared with 201 over the same period 12 months prior.

The number of reported residential burglaries was halved compared with May 2014, with three reported, down from six.

There were 11 domestic violence reports, down one.

Criminal damage reports investigated were up by one from 12 to 13.

In other news, residents of Verde Town Homes volunteered their time to clean out a large drainage channel by the Outpost Mall and Finnie Flat Road.
