More information has been released by the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office about a May 30 shooting which left one man dead.
Ebin Proctor, 18, was shot by a deputy after reportedly getting into a foot chase and scuffle with the officer, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The incident started a little after 4 a.m.
Proctor was one of six people in a Jeep SUV pulled over by two deputies on Vaquero Lane.
According to YCSO Chief Deputy John Russell, Proctor didn’t give his real name to the deputies.
It was soon discovered that Proctor was wanted on a warrant for violating his probation after recently pleading guilty to assaulting a Chino Valley police officer in 2014.
“A few minutes into the traffic stop, Proctor suddenly ran from the scene,” according to Russell’s report. “[Twenty-six]-year-old Deputy Steven Gorman, a two-year veteran of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, initiated a foot pursuit and caught up with Proctor in the backyard of a home on nearby Yuma Circle, at which point Deputy Gorman deployed his Taser which was ineffective.”
According to the sheriff’s office, Proctor then attacked Gorman.
Gorman used pepper spray during the struggle while Proctor allegedly fought with the deputy for control of his gun, according to the report.
“Fearing for his life, the deputy was forced to shoot Proctor, who died on scene,” Russell stated.
Gorman was treated for injuries at Verde Valley Medical Center.
The investigation into the incident is being handled by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, standard procedure when local law enforcement officers are involved in a shooting.
