Clippers raise record amount at Jelly Bean Meet

Published:

A dessert auction Saturday, June 5, at their season-opening meet raised a record amount of money for the Cottonwood Clippers — nearly $1,300.

“A lot of people were bidding, my dad did a fantastic job selling all these cakes — it was really cool to see,” head coach Daniel Nevarez said. “It shows that families are really onboard and really want to be part of what we’re doing with these kids.”

The Clippers, a recreational swimming club that will begin its summer season Thursday, June 11, in Anthem, asked parents to make their favorite desserts for auction halfway through the intrasquad Jelly Bean Meet.

Nevarez expects 50 of his 95 Clippers to travel to Anthem, with 31 making the trip Saturday, Jan. 13, to the Bullhead City Invitational.

“Bullhead’s usually always lighter,” Nevarez said. “It will be our second time there. We took third last year, which I was extremely excited and impressed with.”

No less than eight Clippers won multiple events in their age group June 5, but it was 12-year-old Zoey Arwine who impressed Nevarez the most with her solo win in the 50-yard butterfly in 00:32.64.
