Teen fatally shot by YCSO deputy

Published:

An 18-year-old Cottonwood man was shot and killed following a traffic stop in the Verde Villages early Saturday, May 30, by a Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Ebin Lamont Proctor was shot by a deputy after reportedly trying to flee on foot and then allegedly scuffling with the deputy, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A reported “equipment violation” prompted police to stop the Jeep SUV on Yuma Drive. Proctor was a passenger.

Five other males were in the vehicle and were detained and questioned, according to DPS. One of the passengers was a juvenile.

DPS is handling the investigation because a local law enforcement officer is involved in a shooting.

The deputy who shot Proctor was taken to Verde Valley Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. He was later released, according to YCSO spokesman Dwight D’Eveyln.
“The deputy involved in this incident was not shot but did sustain non-life-threatening injuries during the confrontation,” D’Evelyn said. Per department policy, the deputy’s name was not immediately released.

A memorial page for Proctor has been set up on Facebook by family members.
