College pushed to delay tax hike

Published:

A special committee created to advise the Yavapai College Governing Board about Verde Valley concerns has been traveling around the region to get the opinions of elected leaders, officials and residents.

So far, the committee has visited with the school superintendents of the Verde Valley, the Yavapai-Apache Nation Tribal Council, the Sedona City Council, business leaders and others.

Last week, two members of the advisory committee visited the Cottonwood City Council May 12 to discuss the recommendations they plan on taking back to the college’s governing board.

Committee Chairman Paul Chevalier of Sedona and Committee Member Carolyn Fisher, who represents unincorporated areas in Yavapai County District 3, outlined their progress to the council.

The committee was formed with the unveiling of the college’s 10-year plan last year.

A report considered by the board last year predicts that Yavapai County’s population will grow by 23 percent in the next 10 years, with most of the increase centered in the Prescott Valley area.

The plan calls for around $103 million in capital expenditures, most of which will be spent on the Prescott and Prescott Valley side of the mountain.
