Clarkdale OKs cellular tower

The Clarkdale Town Council approved a permit for a cell tower last week, with a few conditions.

Several residents spoke out with concerns about the tower at the Town Council’s May 12 meeting.

The 65-foot tower is planned to be constructed at 1450 SR 89A, between Lisa Street and Scenic Drive.

Capital Telecom, based out of New Jersey, is the company that wants to build the tower, currently the site of a mini-storage facility.

The tower is needed, the company argued, to provide additional cellular phone coverage for Verizon.

The Clarkdale tower will be built on a piece of land measuring 40 by 60 feet.

It would be surrounded by a chain link fence six feet high. A small shelter would also be built on the property, which is zoned for commercial use but currently undeveloped.

It is near private property where people live, however, one source of contention.

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 requires municipalities to zone at least one area where cell towers can be built while allowing the town in question to determine where it wants them built.
