Geotourism plan targets the Verde

Published:

Who knows an area better than the people who call it home?

National Geographic is banking on that while working with communities throughout Sedona and the Verde Valley to spotlight some of the attractions in this part of Arizona.

The idea is to create a Geotourism MapGuide, an interactive online map to serve as a portal to highlight the best of what the region has to offer, wonders and points of interest both cultural and natural.

It’s part of the organization’s geotourism initiative, a stated goal of which is “inspiring travelers to visit the places most respected and recommended by the people who live there.”

An interactive site already exists online with several attractions already listed, including Clarkdale’s Arizona Copper Art Museum and Fort Verde State Historic Park, among others.

Now the goal is to expand the listings of things to see and places to go by relying on members of the community to submit their own suggestions.

Representatives from National Geographic hosted community meetings across the Verde Valley last week, including one in Camp Verde on Thursday, May 14.
