Mingus actors win state awards

The theater program at Mingus Union High School has been recognized for its work after winning six of 13 awards this month at the American High School Theater Awards, hosted at Gammage Auditorium on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe.

The students won in several categories for their work in putting on a production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” a musical based on a film from the 1960s about a woman making her way in 1920s New York.

The students were finalists for eight awards, competing against Chaparral High School, Hamilton High School, Millennium High School, Notre Dame Prep, Payson High School and Phoenix Country Day School.

Gloria Acala walked away with the award for best actress. Aylssa Ebel won in the best dancer category, Peyton Drake got an honorable mention, Mariah Jones won best hair and makeup while Paul Amato and Caleb Furey went home with the award for best sound design along with Caleb Conlin.

Dylan Capello was awarded a scholarship prize for his efforts, $500.
