The Yavapai Food Council has been working for years to try to meet the food needs of some of the area’s most vulnerable residents.
Now the organization in looking for volunteers to help carry out its mission in the Camp Verde, Rimrock and Beaver Creek areas.
There are a variety of different programs administered by the food council that could use more help, said Ariel Thomas-Urlick, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, program coordinator with the group.
SNAP used to be known as the food stamps program.
The program’s purpose is largely the same: To provide help with getting food into the hands of families in economic need.
People who participate have to apply and, like anything involving government programs, enrolling requires navigating a certain amount of red tape.
“We offer assistance with the applications,” Thomas-Urlick said.
That involves volunteers who show up at the Camp Verde Parks and Recreation Department on Main Street and meet with people to help guide them through the application process.
Volunteers with SNAP receive training to learn the ins-and-outs of the application, a course that lasts about 45 minutes.
Other volunteers receive more intensive training for other food council programs, Thomas-Urlick said.
