Park to be Garrisoned for veterans

Published:

Plans are in the works for a special park to honor those men and women who have served in this nation’s armed forces.

The idea was approved last week by the Cottonwood City Council.

The Military Service Park is planned for a section of Garrison Park, taking up around a half-acre on the northeast corner.

Garrison Park is located near the city’s recreation center off of Sixth Street.

The idea for the new park section is from the Marine Corps League and the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

The city was first approached with the idea in January.

“Keith Vogler, Verde Valley Detachment of the Marine Corps League, contacted the city manager requesting city staff presence at an upcoming meeting on Jan. 27, at the VFW regarding a proposed project involving the development of a veteran’s military service park in Cottonwood,” a report from the city’s community services department stated. “This first meeting was to brainstorm potential options and discuss opportunities for location in the Cottonwood area. Dave Blauert, one of the attendees, had previously been an integral part in the construction of two of these parks in the past and provided excellent material with the Veterans of Foreign Wars locally.”

Several locations were considered, including land near Cottonwood Cemetery and Riverfront Park.
